The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is one of the poorest nations in the world. There is an estimated 500,000 refugees living in shanty towns on the outskirts of the capital city of Nouakchott. The lack of clean drinking water and proper sewage has led to many diseases among these refugees. The only hospital for the entire country is located in Nouakchott. This hospital is trying to meet the need of the country's 2.8 million people, nearly half of which are under the age of 15. In the small pediatric ward, 75% of the children are there because of malnutrition and diarrhea. Due to the insufficient supply of medicines and equipment, this hospital struggles to provide adequate health care. IMPACT's goal is to make a difference in Mauritania. We hope to meet the growing need through our KIDS program, facilitating teams of our doctors, assisting the current hospital, and the planned construction of a new pediatric hospital. |
